Now regarding the power issue - surely these people could kill two birds with one stone - georgeous mechanical movement telling the time AND charging battery/powering electonics like they are now doing in hybrid cars? Would that count as a "complication"?! That's where the likes of Omega/Rolex/Tag should be going. Keeps the soul of the mechanical watch and harnesses the new technology. Surprised no one has done this yet.

I'm waiting for Omega or Panerai to enter the market with a crossover version. It must be harming sales so I suspect they'll have to move with the times. A nice steel chrono Swiss movement with a Qualcomm driven display perhaps? Like breitling do with their aviator range.

Sure it was someone in Rolex that said words to the effect 'Why would I be worried about digital watches, we make luxury items'

The other issue is that the watchmakers won't be geared up to move as fast as IT needs to be updated to stay current. Your Breitling would be useless in about 5 years tops.

Fair point!
Eb

They don't have two movments, but I suspect they have patent on the tech which is quite advanced, and, I suspect, almost totally useless as yet. Battery life is still years in a quartz so never having to replace it is not a huge selling point.

Similarly the Citizen Eco-drive. It's interesting, but hardly a big deal.

*But* both those techs could be harnessed to deal with the battery life issue for smart watches. Kinetic more so I suspect as it has no requirement for screen space.

Love the fact analogues have self winding, perpetual motion.

Think Rolex have got it right. They're a luxury item. Not the latest IT craze.

Just my 10 cents.

Totally agree. I see *very* little intersection between a smart watch and any of my collection. If someone could design a smart 'bangle' or similar, though, I'd be right there.

I'll never buy any Apple product - we're currently having to change about 10,000 Iphone 5's & 6's because they don't sync with anything else out there. May be OK as a toy but there not a useful tool. The company I work for is having to purchase 10,000 Windows phones now! - I hope these perform better.
I use Android phones, they never give any trouble and are far more functional day to day and are much less intrusive to use than Apple toys.
As for an Apple watch - please spare me from this marketing tosh.

Odd. My iPhone syncs with everything. Including Exchange....

Hate having a mobile phone let alone being strapped to one... Always surprised by the amount of time people spend staring at their phone in case they miss a kitten that has farted etc...so now they will just look at the wrist constantly for the next up-date.

I like to be able to leave home and think thats it no one bugging me or trying to sell PPI/Claim for a broken nail etc etc etc.

Oh I miss the early 80s

Fed up with colleagues and clients ringing to say 'have you read your email' when they only sent it 5 minutes previously!
Could not cope with an annoying watch on my wrist that does the same thing as an annoying smartphone that constantly beeps and vibrates for attention! At least you can leave a smartphone in a draw and only check when you want to check!

Fully agree! I now have the volume on my phone almost always off and those irritating notifications turned off on email and messaging. I have no idea how many emails I get each day buts it's generally between a hundred and 2 or 3x that. Add in the Skype messages, text messages and phone calls and I really don't need any other way of being contacted.

And fwiw I reckon the Apple watch looks a bit twattish. That said, I'd be interested to have a proper look at one. I'm happy to be wrong. I get enough practice.
