Ok sticking with Minnesota, in my era every boy wanted a toy that was first manufactured in Minnesota - what were they?

Sticking with models (pun intended!) the name AIRFIX has been with the company since it was founded in 1939 however they did not start out as a toy/model making company.

What was their first plastic model of?

Bonus but no victory for the year the famous Spitfire model first appeared?

The Spitfire model came in 1953, well according to James May same year as the coronation. No idea what the first model was though, a boat of some sort maybe?

Correct on the Spitfire year Andy and a good guess with 'some kind of boat', the second 'toy' model was indeed a boat, actually a small model of the Golden Hind.

Yep just the bonus answered so far, a clue however is that the first model wasn’t initially a toy but a reps sales tool!

Clue time:

The Owner of the company commissioned Airfix to make scale models of their product to give to their rep's as their clients were mostly illiterate and brochures were really not doing it for them.

The model was supplied fully assembled but could be taken apart into over 30 pieces as it was not glued. It was also made of acetate. The models proved so popular with the rep's families that Airfix started selling them to reduce the price to the client too. Initially they were also sold fully assembled. Soon however it was realised the cost could be further reduced by selling them unassembled so they were boxed in a vacuum formed tray as parts. Later still they were just boxed and still on the moulding sprues.

If you find an acetate one it is worth a few bob but not as much as the full size item it is modelled from!

(I really need to find my dad's one and also his golden hind...)
