A mate of mine asked.. did they fit the fully Auto ZF transmission into the last of the early series cars
as he's not keen on the Duo Select arrangement

As he remembers how bad the Alfa Selespeed 156 gearbox was, as the Maser gearbox is still basically a manual with hydraulic actuation

Cheers

Also the later 4.2 wet sump engine with blue rocker covers mate.
Same as the 4.2 GT unless you go later for a red top 4.7.

I thought only the 4.2 DS had red rocker covers and dry sump? 4.2 and 4.7 autos wet sump and blue rocker covers.

Agree re DS, love it, coming off a roundabout and flicking up in country lanes is one the best feelings in the world, driving up the A638 today with a Jag F-type on my tail, left him for dead at every segment, and managed 20.3mpg, cornering totally flat, Jag leaning over like mad.....

Just wish my TPMS worked and my driver window would go up properly but these things are on the to-do list.....

I think once I get those two sorted I will have reached Italian car nirvana.......

Sorry I'm lost.. so your saying a 18 year old design manual robustized gearbox design is better than a modern ZF 7 or 8 speed transmission that most hi end car manufacture's use today

I cant see that

I say subjectively yes, if you prefer a manual generally. The DS is a manual that can do auto if needed, the ZF is an auto that can let you sort of pretend to change the gears if you must, it's not the same for me at least.

Do you want a sports/sporty saloon car or a nice car with a slush box?

Having had the DS for a few weeks it really is a rewarding thing to use and can be very smooth if treated in the right way. Never really used it in auto as that would miss the point

I had a go in a mates new F Pace Jag with the ZF Trans, it was just superb, perfectly suited with the paddle shifters too

It wasn't a slush box!

And getting on to transmission's.. I recon the old school maser 3200 Aus BTR Trans with the sport mode is better than the later 4200 DS

I drove a F Type 400 Sport and I doubt a well driven one would be slower than a QP on my fav road. The gearbox was a gem and very quick, plus with no body roll it went around corners quicker than a QP but then it's a sports car against a big saloon. I love the QP with DS and its a car that shrinks around you but it's still a big car against the point a squirt F Tupe. The gearbox in the QP felt it's age against the box the the F.......now whether that's a good thing or not is arguable.

I vote for the full Auto ZF box
On my 07 Exec QP it is wonderful, smooth, responsive, kick down, easy
What is not to like?

The ZF auto box in the 2007 QP is not as good (naturally) as the latest version as found in, say, a new Jag F Pace. But it is a perfectly good auto box all the same. Just a bit dissatisfying as a driving tool when compared to the DS box when on the open road. The reason I sold my QP GTS was because I became so bored by the ZF, and much preferred the DS of my previous three QP's. If only they had offered the DS box in the GTS car...

I'm with Ewan. I do like the ZF when I'm stuck in town or feeling lazy, but I find the kick down takes too much effort and in non-sport mode it holds the revs too far down. Coupled with the need for the 4.2 to be spinning pretty fast, I'm really looking forward to getting an MC.

Which is not to say the GT ZF is in any way bad. It's bloody lovely, and for long journeys pretty much un-beatable. I just want something a little harder core.
